Welcome to BeFix — Reliable. Local. Gas Safe.
In today’s video, we’re looking at the Worcester Bosch 226 error code — one of the most common issues homeowners see when their boiler stops working. I’ll explain what it means, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a Gas Safe engineer.
The 226 fault on a Worcester Bosch boiler is linked to low system pressure or the dry fire protection system activating. In simple terms, the boiler has detected there isn’t enough water in the heating circuit to run safely. Without sufficient water, the heat can’t circulate, and the boiler protects itself by locking out to prevent damage.
There are a few typical reasons for this fault:
The most common is low water pressure, usually from air in the system or a small leak somewhere in your pipework or radiators.
It could also be due to a faulty pressure sensor not reading the correct pressure.
Sometimes, it’s a filling loop that’s been left slightly open, causing inconsistent pressure readings.
And in rare cases, the expansion vessel may have lost charge, allowing pressure to drop each time the heating cools down.
Here’s what you can safely do before calling an engineer:
Check your pressure gauge. On most Worcester Bosch boilers, it’s on the front or underneath the display. It should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold.
If it’s below 1 bar, you’ll need to top up the system. Look for a silver flexible hose underneath the boiler — that’s your filling loop.
Open both valves slowly and watch the gauge rise. Once it reaches 1 to 1.5 bar, close both valves tightly.
Reset the boiler and see if it restarts.
If pressure keeps dropping after topping up, you likely have a leak somewhere in the system — maybe under a radiator valve, or a weeping joint near the boiler.
If your boiler still shows the 226 error after topping up, or the pressure continues to fall every few days, it’s time to call BeFix. We’ll carry out a pressure stability test, check the expansion vessel, and look for hidden leaks. If the pressure sensor or PCB is faulty, we can replace it safely and efficiently.
