Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met PLO leader Yasser Arafat in Cairo Monday amid signs of movement in the Middle East peace process.

It's the second time in a week the two have talked about the July 1 deadline for Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank.

PLO chairman Yasser Arafat came to the Presidential Palace in Cairo to discuss the Middle East peace process with President Mubarak.

The West Bank withdrawal and elections were originally supposed to take place last summer, but negotiations have been stalled by Israeli security concerns in the wake of a series of deadly bombings by Islamic militants.

In a meeting with Arafat in Jericho yesterday, (Sunday) U-S Secretary of State Warren Christopher urged him to consider accepting an Israeli pull-out from four West Bank cities.

But that would fall short of the withdrawal envisioned in the Israel-P-L-O accord.

Current negotiations aim to broaden Palestinian self-rule approved for Gaza and the West Bank town of Jericho in May, 1994.

But the Palestinians say they cannot have free and fair elections while Israeli troops stay in their communities.

After today's talks Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said Arafat reported "some progress" in negotiations with Israel, but added there was still much to agree on.
