The Side Bend. We have seen it a lot over our time working out in gyms. People think that it will help develop the obliques. But in reality, all the exercise is good for is leading to an injury. See why here!
The side bend is trying to target the oblique by holding a dumbbell to your side and lowering it. You will feel a stretch, what we call a tissue stretch, but it is not really contracting and growing the muscle. If you really want to train your obliques you need to try doing things such as wood chops or med-ball tosses, something that trains your obliques in the rotational plane: the plane that they were supposed to be in.
When you want to train the obliques make sure you think about rotating or resisting rotation. A better version of the side bend is the farmer carry.
