Argo is heading home soon from his 4 week board and train with TGD New Orleans. It’s one thing for a dog to behave in sterile, controlled environments, the real challenge is the real world—you know, the place they actually live. 😉

Whether you’re doing the training yourself, or are have a professional helping, be sure that once the foundation is set, your dog is able to perform in the real world. Whether that be stores like this, noisy outdoor areas (like schools and bustling businesses), or just dog and critter filled city areas. This is where you’ll find out how far the training has actually come, and where the gaps are that still need to be addressed.

Don’t get caught in the delusion of looking good with no pressure or challenge. That’ll cause you to get caught with your pants down when real life throws a curveball. But like I said, this next step happens AFTER a solid foundation is set and your dog is able to perform well in low intensity, low challenge, low distraction environments. Then, incrementally add more and more challenge and difficulty—at the pace both your dog and YOU are able to handle.
