Vila e município do distrito de Beja com cerca de 6200 habitantes, divididos em 7 freguesias. A vila fica localizada numa elevação na margem direita do Rio Guadiana. Mértola foi no passado ocupada pelos romanos, visigodos seguindo-se os árabes que lhe deram o nome de Mārtulah.
Era na época um importante porto fluvial, com o seu castelo localizado numa posição dominante sobre aquele trecho do rio Guadiana. A sua importância era tal que, durante um curto período do século XI, foi capital de um pequeno emirado islâmico independente, a Taifa de Mārtulah.
Em 1238, foi reconquistada definitivamente aos árabes pelas forças cristãs, que lhe mudaram o nome para o atual “Mértola”.

Town of Mértola
Town and municipality in the district of Beja with approximately 6,200 inhabitants, divided into seven parishes. The town is located on a hill on the right bank of the Guadiana River. Mértola was formerly occupied by the Romans, Visigoths, and then by the Arabs, who gave it the name Mārtulah.
At the time, it was an important river port, with its castle located in a dominant position overlooking that stretch of the Guadiana River. Its importance was such that, for a brief period in the 11th century, it was the capital of a small independent Islamic emirate, the Taifa of Mārtulah.
In 1238, it was definitively reconquered from the Arabs by Christian forces, who changed its name to the current "Mértola."
