Por esta cidade passaram os fenícios, gregos, cartagineses e os romanos que trouxeram o desenvolvimento, instalando fábricas de salga de peixe e fornos para cerâmica. A queda do império romano, as invasões bárbaras e a constante pirataria causaram a estagnação, entre os séculos VI e XII. A época dos descobrimentos portugueses e conquistas em África trouxeram de novo o desenvolvimento com o comércio do sal, mas foi no século XIX, que a cidade conheceu o incremento que perdera. Em 1860 chegou o caminho-de-ferro, e com a industrialização, veio a indústria conserveira que em Setúbal chegou a ter mais de 100 fábricas.

This city was visited by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans, bringing development, establishing fish-salting factories and ceramic kilns. The fall of the Roman Empire, barbarian invasions, and constant piracy caused stagnation between the 6th and 12th centuries. The era of Portuguese discoveries and conquests in Africa brought renewed development with the salt trade, but it was in the 19th century that the city experienced the growth it had lost. In 1860, the railway arrived, and with industrialization came the canning industry, which in Setúbal eventually had over 100 factories.
