When Tara Humphries was 22 weeks pregnant with her son Harrison, she found out he had two disorders—amelia and an omphalocele birth defect. Although doctors said Harrison would likely be born with no arms, legs or feet, he was born with feet and toes. His hips and knees were abnormal, and his arms absent. Harrison was also diagnosed with scoliosis at birth. The family went to see Dr. Michael Schmitz to treat the curve in his spine and limb differences. Harrison has had different body casts to help with the curve in his spine, and he goes to frequent occupational and physical therapy appointments to help with mobility.
Harrison loves the UGA Bulldawgs, playing Madden on his XBOX (with his toes) and coaching his elementary school’s basketball team. His parents are excited to see what the future holds for him and are grateful for Children’s being there every step of the way.
Breakdown of Harrison’s Conditions
What is Amelia?
• Amelia is a condition that causes abnormalities in the arms and legs and produces a flipper-like and completely absent appendage.
• It is extremely rare. Studies show that amelia defects show up in 1-4 out of 100,000 births.
What is Omphalocele?
• It is a congenital birth defect where the intestines develop outside the abdomen, covered by a thin membrane.
• Omphalocele treatment often includes bracing to help contain the organs as well as surgery to put the organs back in place and close the area.
• Omphalocele defects are seen in about 1 in 4,000 babies across the country.
What is Scoliosis?
• Scoliosis is a lateral or sideways curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees.
• It appears in about 3% of children and can occur at any age but is often most noticeable between the ages of 9 and 16, when kids are growing rapidly.
• It can be treated by close observation, bracing and sometimes surgery.
