In a recent Mirror Now Debate on the oil spill in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Esther Mariaselvam, Associate Director of ActionAid Association, remarked on the severe repercussions of this oil spill on biodiversity as well as the livelihoods of fisherfolk and local villagers. She shed light on the disproportionate impact on marginalised communities, underscoring the heightened vulnerability they face due to more frequent and intense disasters. Esther highlighted the dire situation faced by fisherfolk whose livelihoods depend on the coast and sea. The spill has prevented fisherwomen from selling their catch, while boats and nets lie damaged. Esther also expressed concern about the health risks faced by those from fishing communities engaged in oil removal without adequate protective gear. She called for proactive government measures to organise assistance and ensure affected families receive proper compensation.
