Your gait is how you walk and can change as we age. This can be due to medications, injuries, pain, decreased flexibility and posture and the fear of falling.
This video will show you different drills that my help improve your gait, move in different directions, which is functional exercise for daily living, and reduce the risk of falls. Some examples of some of our gait, balance and mobility drills are
Stepping
High knees
Straight leg marching
Sideways walking
Cross overs
Up on Toes
Up on heels
As you become proficient and confident you can do the drills a little quicker and this will help improve your agility – agility is the ability to be able to move quickly in different directions without the fear of falling.
There are many older adults that have kept to a high level of fitness, still play sport or go to the gym. These seniors can do higher intensity exercises including the agility ladder. It all depends on your health and fitness level. I shown a sample of more advanced agility drills at the end of this video.

SAFETY TIPS
Always speak with your GP before starting any exercise programs. If you have any underlying conditions that are not controlled this can put you at risk when exercising. If you have had a fall or at high risk of falling I do not recommend doing these exercises alone, and would seek one on one professional instruction.
Always put your ladder clear of clutter and near a wall in case you need to hold on
Always warm up before doing exercise for at least 5 minutes – this could be just walking around the house or garden – and cool down 5 minutes as well
If you don’t have a ladder, you can practice the different drills without one along a straight line near a wall for support – advance to a ladder when you are confident with the patterns
Start off very slow, learning the technique first
Posture is very important, stand tall – eyes ahead – chest lifted – tummy narrow – shoulders back and arms relaxed, breath and swing your arms naturally.
Once you have mastered the technique you can practice the movements quicker
