Super Chinese World 3 (1995, SNES/SFC, English Gameplay 2021)

Описание: Super Chinese World 3 is a side-action RPG and also seconds as a turn-based RPG depending on what you choose. It was released in 1995, Developed and Published by Culture Brain. The English fan-translation was in 2021 by DDS.


STORY: 12/20
An evil galactic force, Gingara Maoh, are looking to free some dimensional beast, Dimetron so they can overtake the Galaxy. Shortly after laying waste to a neighbouring galaxy a visitor appears in Chinese Land looking for the help of heroes to take down this evil empire. Shortly after, this person comes across Jack and Ryu who agree to help.

It's a pretty basic story, similar to the other two games where an intergalactic enemy is looking to take over and rule the universe. The in-game story seems quite plain and straight to the point, similar to how Rpgs were like on the NES.

GRAPHICS: 15/20
I don't know what it is about this game but it has some charm to it, it's bright colours (like the other two games), vibrant and large world gives it a lived-in feeling. Battles are very cartoony looking, brightly coloured and each monster has its own specific look, other than the ones that are just carbon copies and just recoloured. The towns look okay but considering this is the 3rd game in the series I would have expected to see better graphics for the buildings and NPCS used at this stage. Jack and Ryu look different slightly again, they look older, which makes sense if this is set after the first two games but again they still look like identical twins which annoyed me with the first two games.

SOUND: 10/20
The music is okay, but limited by the seems of it, towns all using the same track, battles using the same track, etc, so this I can see getting old very quick, leading to your own music being played eventually. The sound effects are also okay but seem limited, even in battles the sound effects are nothing to rave about, a shame really.

GAMEPLAY: 15/20
The first major thing to note about this game is it introduces a different style of battles if you want, you can have the usual side-view side-scrolling battles (like the other 2 games) OR you can have the game play out like a proper Jrpg, which is awesome. Come to think of it, I don't think there's any other Rpg on the SNES/SFC that offered two different battle styles in the same game, not for an RPG at least I don't think.

Either way, the game plays exactly like the other 2 games, explore the world, move onto the next town, sort some problem out, upgrade gear, do some mini-game for a new skill, move on, and repeat.. it's very linear, which is a shame. The game can often be hard also, so expect there to be death in some battles because you have strayed too far off the beaten track.

There's a couple of mini-games to play to learn skills and earn prizes, the mini-games I encountered was a mash button, and the other a card matching game, nothing original but it's something to break the game up a little for fun.

Depending on what option you choose to have your battles set out in (Jrpg or side-view platformer style) things will change slightly, the story changes a little, you’ll meet different characters, elements of the plot will play out differently, and even the endings will change. So the game really puts an emphasis on replay value also.

I will say this, it's extremely linear so the fun in the game is really tested with how badly you want to finish the game cos at some points it drags. The most annoying elements of the side-scrolling battles are still present, where you have to align yourself up properly to the enemy or you are going to miss or get slaughtered, ugh!

TRANSLATION: 18/20
The translation seems to be working fine, it seems some things have slight graphical problems depending on the emulator you use but other than that all seems good. MY issue however is the lack of feeling in most of the npcs, it just seems very cold in the writing or dialogue they give you, it's very blunt and to the point and no small talk really. I can't explain it, i'd talk to the NPCS but only cos I was just "going through the motions" so to say, I wish the translator had done something about that feeling that comes across from most of them.

OVER ALL: 70/100
It's not a bad game, and definitely an upgrade from the previous two with the additional battle system and the choice to choose which you want. The multiple changes that happen depending on what you choose is a nice touch also. Do I recommend it..? YEAH! why not, especially if you are a Super Chinese World fan.
