Super Chinese World 2 is an Action-Platformer RPG, it was released as a Japanese only game in 1993 for the Super Famicom. It was developed and published by Culture Brain, the publishers of the 1st game, released as 'Super Ninja Boy' for English releases. This English fan-translation was released by the very talented group DDSTranslation on the 17th October 2020.
STORY: 15/20
The game takes place after the events of the 1st game, an intergalactic meeting between governments is intersected by a group of evil space monsters and kidnap all the officials. The evil guys want the two heroes of the game to take part in some arena battle. Soon enough the two brothers find out they are not strong enough so set out to become stronger so they have the power to save the elected officials and defeat the space pirates.
GRAPHICS: 12/20
Okay, this game has a number of different graphical styles due to the various battle/exploration systems it has, so I will break it down. The game is very colorful in each of the different types of genres, you can easily make out what everything is supposed to be.
Now, the overworld setting is nice and colorful but it kinda looks odd, the characters are extremely small and look out of place to the rest of the world's graphics. Inside towns have nice colors but very basic graphics, if it wasn't for the fact of all the colors used I would swear this game is a NES/FC game.
The battles use nice colorful graphics, even the monsters and enemies you encounter are nicely drawn. The dungeons are a bit of a mix bag, platformer game action, that looks okay and then the rpg sections of exploration areas that are top-down standard RPG stuff that look not so great.
SOUND: 12/20
I have heard worse, trust me but the over used song in shops and the INN gets old really quick that resulted in me putting on my own music. The music uses that usual Chinese/Japanese music with some of the tracks being okay and a lot of them being not so great.
The sound effects for the game don't fair so well either with the limited few there are available, that damn hard punch sound will be the bane of your life for the rest of the game if you are brave enough to play the entire game.
GAMEPLAY: 6/20
There's a reason this scores so low, it's because the game's controls are so unresponsive all you can do is use jump and punch without doing something else you never intended to do, like block, crouch, or something. The controls are just a mess and you will more than likely you will find yourself playing the entire game using just those two mentioned skills above.
The game has a couple of mini-games to play that will net you some nice rewards, the 1st mini-game being a picture match game where you can win the skill that allows you to ESCAPE the never ending encounter rate of battles.
There's a nice selection of shops to buy stuff from, like weapons, armor, foods, etc but using the food items in battles can be quite tricky. The game is one hell of a grind, from the moment you start playing it's grind to level 3 to get a skill, grind to get all the money needed for armor, move onto the next town and grind more outside for armor, enter the dungeon 2 steps fight, 2 steps fight.. it's just too much.
TRANSLATION: 18/20
It's not a bad translation and no errors of what I could see other than the two I will point out now. The points come off because when reading the dialogue in game it has that feeling of let's rush the story with as little as we can but just enough to keep the person playing, in my opinion it needed more fleshing out.. the dialogue is short and to the point too quick.
The second issue I had was when there is too many monsters on screen you get the bottom of your legs go invisible or glitch, that just don't look nice at all but i'm guessing that's a limitation issue with the console itself and not the translation group's fault, this I thought might be able to be fixed some how, the same type of thing happens in SNES/SFC Mario games when too many monsters are on screen, I think it's some type of graphics drawing issue.
OVER ALL: 63/100
I'm actually quite surprised how high this is but it's probably due to the story and graphics rating. It's a nice attempt by DDSTranslation and it's another SNES/SFC game now translated and out for people to play so kudos to them for that. Did I enjoy it..? not really, the controls pee'd me off big time.
Would I recommend this game? only if you're a fan of the series and love grindy as hell RPGs, otherwise.. STAY CLEAR !!
