World Première Recording
Johann Samuel Harsow had the good fortune to be a student of Johann Philipp Kirnberger, who himself had been a pupil of J. S. Bach. Harsow later became organist at the Marienkirche in Berlin. He had the reputation of being an excellent interpreter of the works of J. S.Bach. Interestingly, sources give widely different birth years for this composer; some state he entered the world in or around 1720; others, that it was 1759; all seem to agree, however, that he died in 1792.
August Bernhard Valentin Herbing was the son of a musician, Johann Georg Herbing, who naturally became the boy’s first teacher. In 1755, he was working as assistant organist at the Magdeburg Cathedral, and rose to the position of main organist upon the death of Georg Tegetmeyer in 1764. Sadly, Herbing himself passed away just two years later, at the age of not quite thirty-one.
