BIG IDEAS:
Labor unions first began to form at the end of the 1800s when more and more Americans were moving to cities and working in factories.
Most strikes in the late 1800s went badly for workers. Government usually sided with owners and the police and army fought against workers in many famous strikes. This started to change at the beginning of the 1900s when Teddy Roosevelt was president.
The first unions failed. The National Labor Union and the Knights of Labor both made mistakes, but union leaders learned from these mistakes, and eventually, the American Federation of Labor was successful.
Some Americans, such as Eugene Debs, wanted to get rid of owners and give all of the money directly to the workers. These socialist ideas were popular with some people, but never enough to be tested in America.
