BIG IDEAS:
Theodore Roosevelt was a dynamic, young president who took over after McKinley was killed. Roosevelt was different from the presidents of the late-1800s in many ways.
As president, Theodore Roosevelt wanted to balance the needs of workers and owners. He earned the nickname “trustbuster” by taking business owners to court to break up their monopolies.
President Taft continued Roosevelt’s trust busting ways, but in 1912 Roosevelt ran again for president. Republicans were split between Taft and Roosevelt, giving the electoral win to Woodrow Wilson, a democrat.
Wilson was also a progressive, and used the government’s power to promote reform. For example, he created the Federal Reserve and Federal Trade Commission.
