7 Ways Supplement Companies Are Ripping You Off
Supplement Scam #1: Ineffective Compounds
The first one here is extremely basic, and it's the simple fact that most of the compounds that are sold as "muscle builders" or "fat burners" just flat out don't work. They aren't backed by reliable research and are simply put out by marketers looking to make a buck. There are far more ineffective bodybuilding supplements out there than there are effective ones, and most of this stuff (such as testosterone boosters, glutamine, BCAA's, CLA, most pre-workouts, "advanced" creatine, fat burners etc.) is just a straight waste of money.
Supplement Scam #2: Excessive Hype
Even for those muscle building supplements that ARE worth using, the effects are still highly over-exaggerated in most cases. Bodybuilding supplements that work still only "work" to a small degree and will at best provide a modest extra boost to your long term results. At the end of the day though, the vast majority of your muscle gains and fat loss will just come down to proper training and nutrition.
Supplement Scam #3: Price
Not only are you very often being sold an ineffective product, but you'll also be paying a significant price for it as well. It's not uncommon for bodybuilding supplements to run you 20, 30, 50+ dollars per month on a single product, and the markups on most of these supplements are way higher than is truly justified.
Supplement Scam #4: Label Fraud
We've seen many cases of this over the years where popular bodybuilding and fat loss supplements just flat out don't contain what they list. Since the supplement industry is only very loosely regulated by the FDA, you really have no way of knowing for sure what's in any given product unless you conduct a third party test.
Supplement Scam #5: Proprietary Blends
Proprietary blends are simply a way for supplement companies to intentionally under-dose their products without the average consumer knowing. This is where you get a list of ingredients along with the total amount for all of them combined, but not the individual dose per ingredient. This allows a company to list off a bunch of recognizable muscle building supplements on a label and then only sprinkle in a small amount of each one to save on costs.
Supplement Scam #6: Banned Stimulants
Do a bit of research online and you'll come across many cases of banned substances, amphetamines and even steroid compounds being added to over the counter bodybuilding supplements. This is just another reason to be careful, especially if you're a competitive athlete who undergoes drug testing.
Supplement Scam #7: Fake Before/Afters
One scroll through popular social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook and you'll be bombarded with bogus before/after pictures promoting various over hyped pills, powders and teas. Anyone who has gotten into great shape did so through proper training and nutrition over the long term, not to mention that many before/after pictures are touched up or blatantly photoshopped, or use different lighting and angles to exaggerate the changes.
There's nothing inherently bad about using fitness supplements in your program, and there are several that I personally use and recommend.
However, the "good supplements" are few and far between, and will still only provide a small extra boost to your muscle building and fat loss results.
There are far more supplements to avoid out there than there are legitimately effective ones, and it's important to do your research first before handing over your hard-earned money on this stuff.
