Putting Down Roots: Connecting Cartography with the Natural World
Louise Haupert, Georgia DNR
I am inspired by creating physical, tactile, and unconventional cartography as a way to better understand and connect with the land that we portray through maps. As a lifelong resident of communities along the mighty Mississippi River, I've always been fascinated by the unique ecology inspired by its presence. I spend much of my time exploring the forests, bluffs, and wetlands that characterize the northern Mississippi River watershed. I am a lover of trees and a woodworker by hobby, and I am interested in exploring creative ways to get hands-on with geographic visualization. As a goal for my first time NACIS meeting, I am creating a map of native tree species along the Mississippi River, as well as an accompanying one-piece wood carving of the river, hand-crafted from a plank of sustainably and locally harvested Black Walnut. This talk will focus on the process of creating the map and the carving, and the insights and lessons learned from that process, and from the land.
This presentation was made at the 2025 annual meeting of the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS). For more information on NACIS, check out http://NACIS.org.
