Putting maps in their place (and time): bringing archival research into the cartography classroom
Jerry Shannon, University of Georgia
No map is an island, which is to say that all maps exist in social and historical context.Teaching effective cartographic praxis involves helping students understand and articulate these influences. This presentation outlines an archival research activity developed for Maps and the City, an upper-level course at University of Georgia. Students examine maps tied to urban development projects like urban renewal and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, alongside related materials such as reports and photographs. This approach encourages critical reflection on how maps are used to shape and contest urban space. Archival research, through novel engagement with primary sources at historical distance, proves especially valuable for fostering these analytical skills in cartographic education.
This presentation was made at the 2025 annual meeting of the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS). For more information on NACIS, check out http://NACIS.org.
