In this cycling video we climb the famous Corkscrew Road in the Adelaide Hills, from the Gorge Road end up to Montacute Road, South Australia.
This road, which is a favourite in the Tour Down, is a 3.5km long. The last 2.3km section of the road is the climb, which has an average gradient of 8.2% but includes some nice steep 15% sections. All up it takes approximately 20 minutes for an average rider.
The first part of this ride is a scenic and relatively flat ride that follows a small winding creek. After approximately 1.2km you cross over an old single lane bridge, which signals the start of the climb. The gradient then gradually increases to a steep 15% as you make your way to some switchbacks. Once you get through the three switchbacks, and your heart rate is rising, it slowly tapers off for the final part of the climb to Montacute Road.
Once you get to Montacute Road you can then decide to turn left and continue on climbing further up Montacute Road to other parts of the hills, such as up to the top of Mt Lofty, which is the highest point in the Adelaide Hills. Or you can turn right and drop down Montacute Road and head back to the city.
We will be adding more climbs, descents and rides through the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, the home of the Tour Down Under.
Why not visit Adelaide yourself and enjoy our world class cycling that is only ten kilometres from the city. The team at Adelaide Bike Hire would be more than happy to help you.
