A super tasty and easy Hilsa recipe to go with steamed rice, a favorite of fisheterians.
Ingredients:
Ilish (Hilsa): 4 pieces (a picture has 6 pieces for aesthetics
Mustard Oil: 2 tablespoons
Kalo jeere (Nigella seeds): 1 teaspoon
Green Chillies: 2-3 (add more if you like it really hot)
Gram flour (besan) : 2 teaspoons
Roasted Cumin powder: 1teaspoon
Kashmiri Mirch powder: 1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder: 1 teaspoon
Salt: As per taste
Method :
Clean the fish with water and marinate with salt and turmeric powder.
Heat 1 and 1/2 tablespoons mustard oil in a kadhai/frying pan. Keep the gas flame on medium high. Once the oil starts smoking, add the fish and fry lightly for a few minutes. Don't fry for too long as the fish would become hard and chewy. Fry both sides by flipping gently.
After 2-3 minutes, in the same pan add the kalo jeere. Add the gram flour and saute for 10-15 seconds. Add the green chillies. Turn the gas flame to low.
In a bowl mix salt, turmeric powder, kashmiri mirch powder and cumin powder. Add a little water to make a smooth paste.
Add the spice paste to the fish and stir a little. Add 1/2 cup water. Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Take it off the flame and add 1/2 tablespoon mustard oil.
Serve with steamed rice and enjoy.
