The Clover Fork Coal Co. mine operated from 1914 to 1958; this tipple was far older than I guessed in the video! Clover Fork Coal Co. was the strongest opponent of unionization in Harlan County, and was the last mine in the county to unionize, only doing so in 1937. It was owned by the Whitfield family, originally of Walker County, Alabama.
Based on the equipment we found, Clover Fork primarily used old-school "conventional" coal mining methods, utilizing coal cutters and drill-and-blast. The three continuous miners found on site suggest that production shifted to continuous miners later in the mine's life.
