The breeze carries the damp lake air into the car. Without context, this shimmering landscape could easily be mistaken for the shores of a famed Jiangnan lake.
Yet, this land bears a heavier, fiercer name. Huangshi, along with neighboring Daye, is the birthplace of modern Chinese industry, where furnaces once blazed. Its abundant mineral resources once earned it a top economic rank within the province, symbolized by the prestigious “鄂B” license plate. Today, it is a classic resource-exhausted city, where beneath the serene lakes and hills lies the profound narrative of transition and renewal.
Where do we begin to understand a city? With the scenery that resembles “elsewhere,” or with the unique story embedded in its soil and history? As a humble child, I choose to see both—the present greenness that mirrors the West Lake, and the distant echo of its iron-and-steel past.
