Directed and produced by French writer and director Roger Leenhardt, “France is a Garden” (“La France est un jardin,” 1953) is a color semi-scripted documentary film depicting French cultural life and industry in the early 1950s. Sponsored by Caltex, a petroleum brand name of Chevron Corporation, the film builds off of a central metaphor that France is a garden proudly tended to and cultivated by the people of France. While the film is originally in French, this particular version is entirely in English.
