This United States Information Agency (USIA) film presents a poetic travelogue of then-Parliament Leader Anwar Sadat’s historic visit to the U.S. in 1966. The film was related to a U.S. State department charm offensive intended to blunt Egypt’s friendship with the U.S.S.R. and the resulting influence in the Middle East. In 1970, when Sadat became President of Egypt, he severed relations with the U.S.S.R and embraced the United States. In a statement about the change in policy, President Sadat referred to his U.S. visit in ’66 as one of the reasons for the change.
Until 1987, USIA films were prohibited from being screened domestically in the United States as they were produced by the government as propaganda, aimed at influencing international audiences.
Film preserved by UCLA Film & Television Archive from 35mm elements located in the Hearst Metrotone News collection.
