In this video I explain how I attach the outer stems on my cedar strip canoe.
After the strips are mounted you can attach the outer stems. The outer stem should glue directly on top of the inner stem just as I bent them together in Ep 3 ( • Making the Stems (Ep 3 - Cedar Strip Canoe... ). For the end of the canoe I just trim the strips and sand them flush with an orbital. Somewhere on the curve you have to start inlaying the outer stem into the strips. I carve the bulk out with a dremel then finish with hand tools so it’s as exact as possible.
When it’s a good fit I cut the part of the outer stem that sticks out of the inlaid part leaving about a quarter inch sticking up (I sand that off after), then I pre drill some countersunk holes every 7 inches (5 total), and glue it on. I fill my countersunk screw holes with wood dowels then sand it carefully with an orbital to clean everything up. After sanding with 60 grit I fill any cracks with epoxy mixed with sawdust, let that cure and sand it all to 120 or 180.
Important points:
I don’t love my process for this but this is the best way I could figure out how to do it with the tools I have.
It does not look pretty after you screw and glue the outer stem on. I had some pretty serious looking gaps but once I filled the cracks, sanded it down, and put the fiberglass/epoxy on it really looks good.
I have some flexcut knifes that are useful for a lot of canoe building processes: https://www.amazon.com/FLEXCUT-Carvin...
