In this video I explain how I prep the hull of my cedar strip canoe to apply a fiberglass epoxy seal.
Once I build the hull and attach the outer stem, I sand everything to 60 grit - There were a couple spots that I used 40 grit for because they needed some serious sanding. After 60 grit I filled the cracks with a mixture of Ark Composites two part epoxy and sawdust. I tape behind the bigger cracks because the epoxy runs quite a bit before it cures. Sometimes it takes a couple applications of epoxy to fill the holes and cracks completely. For any cracks thinner than 3/16” I don’t really bother filling them. The smaller defects will be filled when you apply the fiberglass epoxy. I wait overnight for the epoxy to cure, then sand those spots with an orbital with 60 grit, then sand the entire boat to 120 grit then sand it to 180 grit. You’re not supposed to go much finer than 180 grit because the fiberglass/epoxy seal won’t bond as well if it’s too fine. For my first canoe I sanded to 120 grit and you really can’t notice the sanding marks by the time you get a varnish finish on.
