The Ten Thousand Immortals were the elite guard of the Achaemenid Persian kings, first clearly described during the reign of Darius I (522–486 BCE). They earned their name from a simple but effective system: their number was always kept at exactly 10,000. When one fell in battle or died, he was immediately replaced, making the unit seem “immortal” to outside observers.
Drawn largely from Persian nobility, they served both as heavy infantry and as the king’s personal guard. In battle they carried spears with ornate counterweights—often described as silver or gold “apples”—along with bows and short swords. Beyond combat, they embodied imperial prestige, marching in disciplined formation from the palaces of Susa to campaigns in Greece. To friend and foe alike, they were the living symbol of Persian order, wealth, and centralized power.
