STORYLINE
Chinese President Hu Jintao told U.S. President George W. Bush at the United Nations on Tuesday that China will boost its cooperation with the United States.
President Hu said he hoped six-party talks in Beijing regarding North Korea's nuclear ambitions would move forward.
"We stand ready to step up our communication and cooperation with the United States so that we can facilitate fresh progress in the second session of the fourth round of the six-party talks," Hu said.
The two leaders met at the United Nations as six-nation talks resumed in Beijing aimed at persuading North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons.
President Hu joined President Bush in a brief photo session before talks.
Bush said he intends to discuss the North Korea and Iran issue further in New York, where the two leaders are visiting to take part in the U.N. world summit that begins on Wednesday. "Economic matters" and Avian flu were also on the agenda, said Bush.
Bush met privately with Hu, who is making his first visit to the United States as his country's leader. The White House is concerned about China's growing economic and military might and its voracious thirst for oil - a factor in rising U.S. gasoline prices.
The president broadly raised human rights concerns with Hu, and the administration presented China's delegation with a list of specific cases that the United States regards as particularly important.
President Bush and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan also fronted the cameras in New York.
