STORYLINE:
US President George W Bush welcomed Chinese President Hu Jintao to the White House Thursday morning with the usual pomp and circumstance.
Although the visit is not billed as a State Visit, the Chinese president was afforded almost all the ceremonies usually accompanying a state visit.
There was the cordial welcome by President and Mrs. Bush on the driveway of the South Lawn at the White House, followed by introductions to the President''s cabinet.
Following the cabinet introductions, Hu reviewed various troop regiments gathered on the White House grounds and then witnessed the usual fife and drum corps welcome.
Both president''s then addressed the assembled crowd.
Bush emphasised the importance of human rights and urged those on both sides of the Taiwan Strait "to avoid
confrontational or provocative acts."
While Hu was speaking a protester located on the media risers at the edge of the South Lawn fence started shouting.
She was protesting alleged mistreatment of practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual movement in China.
Hu and his translator, although aware of the demonstrator, continued with their speech while the shouts continued.
Finally, White House security removed the woman from the crowd.
Hu stressed cooperation with the United States without mentioning any specifics regarding changes in trade policy or financial policy - two areas Bush has indicated he''ll discuss with his counterpart.
Following remarks by both leaders the two men adjourned to the White House where Bush and Hu will meet in the Oval Office.
Later, Bush will host a luncheon for Hu.
