In Titus 1:9-16 the Apostle Paul further instructs Titus as to why an Elder “must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it” (vs.9). Paul explains that an Elder must be able to do this because of need to confront false teachers and false professors; both who must be rebuked and corrected.

vs.9—The Responsibility of Giving Sound Instruction (Educational)

Responsibility #1: Biblical Elders are commanded to give instruction in sound biblical doctrine.

vs.10-11—The Responsibility of Rebuking False Teachers (Confrontational)

Responsibility #2: Biblical Elders are commanded to rebuke false teachers so that they are silenced.

vs.12-16— The Responsibility of Rebuking False Professors

Responsibility #3: Biblical Elders are commanded to rebuke false professors so that they may be sound in the faith.
