Most people come to Fuerteventura for the beaches, but the real soul of the island lies in the mountains.
In this travel vlog, I take a road trip through Central Fuerteventura to explore its historic past and dramatic volcanic landscapes. From the ancient capital of Betancuria (often voted one of the most beautiful towns in Spain) to the giant statues of the Guanche Kings, this is the side of Fuerteventura you won't see from your sunbed.
If you are looking for culture, history, and the best panoramic views on the island, this itinerary is for you.

📍 THE ROAD TRIP STOPS
*1. La Ampuyenta & Antigua*
We start the drive passing through these traditional villages. A highlight is the Ermita de San Pedro de Alcántara in La Ampuyenta, known as the "Sistine Chapel of Fuerteventura" due to its beautiful interior paintings.
*2. Mirador de Guise y Ayose*
You can't miss this stop! Two massive bronze statues (4 meters high) guard the mountain pass. They represent the two ancient Kings of Fuerteventura who ruled the island before the Spanish conquest. The views here stretch all the way to the north coast.
*3. Betancuria (The Old Capital)*
Founded in 1404, this was the original capital of the island, built inland to protect it from pirate attacks. Today, it is a lush, green oasis in the middle of the desert landscape. We explore the historic church (*Iglesia de Santa María*), the flowered courtyards, and the quiet cobbled streets.
*4. Mirador del Risco de Las Peñas*
A short drive south of Betancuria, this viewpoint offers incredible photo opportunities of the steep ravines and winding roads that carve through the mountains.

🚗 DRIVING TIPS: THE FV-30
To reach Betancuria, you will likely drive the **FV-30 road**.
*Is it dangerous?* It is a winding mountain road with many curves, but it is fully paved and wide enough for two cars in most places.
*Take your time:* The scenery is distracting! Use the designated pull-off areas (Miradors) to take photos rather than stopping on the road.
*Cyclists:* This is a popular route for cyclists, so drive carefully around blind corners.
