McKenzie Press Up is named after physical therapist Robin McKenzie and is part of the McKenzie Method, a system developed to reduce back pain through repeated spinal movements and self treatment.
How to Do:
Lie face down with hands under shoulders, relax your legs, and press through your hands to lift your chest while keeping hips on the floor. Move only as far as comfortable, then lower with control.
McKenzie Press Up Standard Method:
Performed as repeated reps pressing up and lowering back down with a brief 1 to 2 second pause at the top to encourage spinal movement and symptom reduction.
Press Up Hold Variation:
Press up and hold the top position for about 10 seconds to build extension tolerance, reduce stiffness, and promote relaxed breathing through the low back.
