According to legend, Calamba got its name when Spaniards asked a local woman, “Cuál es el nombre de este lugar?” (What is the name of this place?) Not understanding Spanish, she replied “Calan ba?” (You want a pot?).
In 1770, when the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories, their Calamba hacienda was confiscated and later taken over by the Dominicans. This opened a new frontier that attracted the youth of Biñan. Among those lured over to play pioneer was Rizal's father, Francisco Mercado.
From an agricultural town, Calamba evolved into an industrial and commercial center, earning cityhood on April 21, 2001.
