Calamba was part of a vast Dominican-owned hacienda, where tenants—including the Mercado family—paid rent.
In the 1880s, tenants protested unjust rents, excessive taxes, and abusive land practices, but after losing their case, families were evicted, banished, and punished. The Mercado stone house was deliberately stripped of its roof and left to ruin, ending the family’s life in Calamba.
The Rizal Shrine is a reconstruction of the original two-story home. Renovation began in 1949 when President Elpidio Quirino passed Executive Order No. 145, with Juan Nakpil as supervising architect. It was inaugurated on June 19, 1950.
