In 1976, residents of a small town in Ohio began receiving anonymous letters from someone who seemed to know their deepest secrets. Affairs, personal disputes, and private conversations were exposed in chilling detail. The letters targeted many people, but one woman—school bus driver Mary Gillespie—became the center of a disturbing campaign of harassment.
Soon the letters escalated. Roadside signs appeared along Mary’s bus route accusing her of an affair. Then the situation turned deadly when one of those signs was discovered to be booby-trapped with a handgun, designed to fire at whoever tried to remove it.
Police eventually arrested Paul Freshour, Mary’s brother-in-law, but even after he was sent to prison, the mysterious letters continued to arrive. To this day, the identity of the Circleville letter writer remains unknown.
Who was behind the letters? And how could they know so much about the people they targeted?
