On the night of November 23, 1953, during the tense early years of the Cold War, a U.S. Air Force interceptor scrambled from Kinross Air Force Base to investigate an unknown radar contact over Lake Superior. The aircraft was piloted by Felix Moncla, with radar operator Robert Wilson seated behind him in a Northrop F-89 Scorpion.
Ground radar operators watched as the interceptor closed in on the unidentified object. On their screens, the two radar blips moved closer together… until they appeared to merge into a single return.
Then something inexplicable happened.
The radar contact vanished.
There was no distress call. No debris field. No wreckage was ever recovered from the vast waters of Lake Superior.
What happened to Felix Moncla that night?
Did his jet collide with another aircraft? Was the radar contact a phantom target? Or could the interceptor have encountered something far stranger?
In this video we examine the timeline, the radar reports, the search efforts, and the theories that attempt to explain one of the Cold War’s most puzzling aviation disappearances.
Let me know in the comments what you think really happened.
