Tsukiji

Tsukiji is a historic district in Tokyo famous for its food culture and traditional atmosphere. It was once home to the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market, which operated from 1935 until 2018 before moving to Toyosu Market.

Today, the lively Tsukiji Outer Market still remains and attracts visitors from around the world. The narrow streets are lined with seafood shops, restaurants, and street-food stalls. Visitors can enjoy fresh sushi, grilled seafood, tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet), and many other local specialties.

Tsukiji is not only about food. It also preserves the feeling of old Tokyo, with traditional stores and small shrines hidden between the busy market streets.

Hamarikyu Gardens

Just a short walk from Tsukiji is Hamarikyu Gardens, a beautiful Japanese landscape garden located along Tokyo Bay. This garden was originally built in the 17th century as a feudal lord’s residence during the Edo period.

One of the most unique features of Hamarikyu is its tidal pond, called Shioiri Pond. The water level of this pond changes with the tides of Tokyo Bay, which is very rare for a Japanese garden.

In the center of the pond stands a traditional teahouse called Nakajima-no-Ochaya. Visitors can enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets while viewing the peaceful scenery.

Hamarikyu Gardens is also famous for its seasonal flowers. In early spring, large fields of rapeseed blossoms (nanohana) turn the garden bright yellow, creating a beautiful contrast with the modern skyscrapers of the nearby Shiodome area.
