Kokubunji is a quiet and culturally rich city located in western Tokyo, about 20–25 minutes from central Tokyo by train. It is known for its ancient temple history, natural springs, and peaceful residential atmosphere.

In the 8th century, during the Nara period, the government ordered provincial temples to be built across Japan. One of them was Musashi Kokubun-ji Temple Ruins, the former provincial temple of Musashi Province.

Today, the ruins remain as an archaeological park where visitors can see reconstructed foundations and learn about the political and religious importance of the site more than 1,200 years ago.

Nearby stands the present-day Musashi Kokubun-ji, which preserves the spiritual legacy of the original temple.

Kokubunji is also famous for its clear natural springs along the Kokubunji Cliff Line, a geographical escarpment running through the area.

A popular walking route is Otaka no Michi, a charming path beside a small stream fed by spring water. The atmosphere is especially beautiful in spring and autumn.

At the end of the path, you will find Masugata Benzaiten, a small shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of water and music.

Kokubunji is ideal for travelers who want to explore a quieter, more historical side of Tokyo beyond the busy city center.
