Scott Fitzgerald closed his novel THE GREAT GATSBY with the lines, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” For me, the past is something that exists within my present, always a film rolling scene by scene within my mind. Many years ago, I came home from a war in a foreign country, and I had a head full of questions that lead me to three years of bible college. I read every book of The Old and News Testaments, The Pentateuch, Kings, Chronicles, The Prophets, and I studied various concordances of every book and prophet. And I read about a man God/Child who spoke of love and peace for the down trodden and the outcast. One day, three years later, during a lecture, with all my knowledge, I looked around me in the class room and faces, and I felt only condemnation. There was very little love to be found, only judgement and hell fire. And I searched within myself, and I saw I too had become hard in my heart, full of laws and brimstone. And an epiphany hit. I who once had been anointed with oil and told was called to be a leader was not fit to offer any condolence to anyone, for who was I to offer peace and comfort when I could no longer see love within myself, only pride and arrogance? So, I gathered up my books, and I left; I packed away my bibles, concordances, and my notes in a trunk, and I left them in my garage, where they sit for the last 29-20 years. And at times, I look search in my garage in the early morning hours to read my old transcripts; as the sun comes up, I find there is a world full of spirituality, and still, there is more condemnation than love: “Laughing” by David Crosby
