During The ICE in St. Moritz, I filmed this 1964 ATS 2500 GTS.
The 1964 ATS 2500 GTS - chassis 2008 - occupies a unique place in motoring history as one of the most innovative and exclusive Italian sports cars of the 1960s. Built by Automobili Turismo e Sport (ATS), the car was the direct result of the famous 1961 "Palace Revolt" at Ferrari, when a group of senior engineers and managers - including Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini - departed Maranello following a dispute with Enzo Ferrari, determined to rival Ferrari on both road and track. The 2500 was unveiled at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show and recognized as the world's first true mid-engine production GT. Independent suspension at all four corners, four-wheel disc brakes, and a tubular spaceframe chassis ensured handling and performance (one of the fastest road-going cars of its era) to the alloy body styled by Franco Scaglione, great Italian designer. Financial struggles plagued ATS, and only 12 cars in total were completed in both steel-bodied GT and lightweight alloy GTS form. This ATS 2500 is an alloy bodied, racing spec model, which only shares these features with just one other ATS, making it a 1 of 2 in the world. The alloy-bodied GTS remains one of the rarest Italian sports cars ever built, a milestone in design and performance, and a centerpiece of any serious concours field.
