Ocho Ornamentation — Class Notes
In this class we worked on ornamenting the pivots in ochos. We began with a large side step to enter the ochos and focused on how the follower can add expression without interrupting the dance.
There are two clear moments where ornamentation can happen:
at the beginning of the pivot
at the end of the pivot
Both require awareness, timing, and patience from both partners.
Ornamenting the Beginning of the Pivot
As the leader initiates the pivot, the follower does not go immediately.
Instead, she grounds, pauses the rotation, and extends the free foot slightly.
After the extension, she returns to the pivot and continues the ocho.
This creates a moment of suspension and intention at the start of the movement.
With practice, this ornament can be gently “capped” at the beginning of the pivot.
This ornament happens before the pivot fully develops.
Ornamenting the End of the Pivot
At the end of the pivot (during the passada), the follower has another chance to ornament.
She may pick the leg up, place it down, and then take the step.
This is not led by the leader.
The leader is simply holding space and waiting for the follower to finish the pivot.
The follower takes her time and completes the movement before stepping.
Leader and Follower Roles
Leader:
Stop and wait.
Hold clear space without rushing.
Allow the follower time to finish the pivot.
Follower:
Take advantage of the pause.
Add movement without disrupting balance or timing.
Complete the ornament, then reconnect to the lead.
Key Takeaway
Ornamentation is a conversation, not a request.
The leader pauses.
The follower continues moving.
Then both return to the dance and go on their way.
Have fun exploring this.
