China-Pakistan Economic Corridor 2025: New Projects to Transform CPEC | What’s Next?

On August 21, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met in Islamabad, pledging to launch new projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
This strategic dialogue, the sixth of its kind, aims to transform CPEC into a corridor of growth, livelihoods, sustainability, and openness, boosting cooperation in industry, agriculture, mining, Gwadar Port development, and the ML-1 railway upgrade. While specific project details remain undisclosed, the agreement signals a deepening of the $46 billion partnership that connects Pakistan’s Gwadar Port to China’s Xinjiang via 3,000 km of roads, railways, and pipelines. This move follows a trilateral meeting in May 2025 with Afghanistan, extending CPEC’s reach to enhance regional connectivity.
Since its launch in 2015, CPEC has delivered $14 billion in energy and infrastructure projects, including motorways like the M8 Hoshab-Gwadar section and the $44 million Pakistan-China Fiber Optic Project. However, challenges persist. Critics highlight Pakistan’s prioritization of Chinese personnel security, with PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasizing Safe City projects, over local grievances in Balochistan, where displacement, environmental degradation, and lack of jobs fuel unrest.
The Balochistan Liberation Army’s actions threaten projects like Reko Diq, a $2 billion copper-gold mine. Pakistan’s debt to China and the 2022 push to dissolve the CPEC Authority underscore governance issues. China’s investment, including export credits for its companies, drives rapid implementation but raises concerns about economic dependency.
The sixth dialogue also addressed geopolitical dynamics. Wang Yi’s recent India visit, resuming trade via Lipulekh Pass, and Pakistan’s talks with the U.S. for Reko Diq access highlight a complex balancing act. Posts on X reflect optimism about CPEC’s economic boost but warn of Baloch resistance and India’s concerns over China-Pakistan ties. The agreement includes plans for a China-Pakistan Joint Marine Research Center and space research cooperation, signaling broader ambitions. Yet, with 50,000 troops along the India-China LAC and Nepal’s objections to Lipulekh trade, regional tensions loom.
Can CPEC’s expansion deliver prosperity without escalating conflicts? Watch to uncover the stakes of this game-changing partnership!
