Bangladesh is facing a growing fuel supply challenge as the country struggles with rising energy demand, global oil disruptions, and concerns about fuel availability in the domestic market. To stabilize the situation, India has started supplying diesel to Bangladesh through a cross-border pipeline, marking an important step in regional energy cooperation.
According to officials from the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, India has delivered 5,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh through the pipeline connected to the Parbatipur border depot. This delivery is part of an existing bilateral agreement between the two countries for long-term energy cooperation.
Under this agreement, India will supply about 180,000 tonnes of diesel annually through the pipeline connecting the Indian refinery to Bangladesh. Officials also stated that around 90,000 tonnes of diesel are expected to be imported within six months to ensure steady fuel availability.
The supply arrives at a time when Bangladesh authorities are closely monitoring fuel stocks due to reports of illegal hoarding and market manipulation by traders attempting to create artificial shortages. The government has started inspections and enforcement actions to prevent such practices and ensure fuel is distributed fairly across the country.
To control the situation, the government has also imposed fuel purchase limits for different categories of vehicles. These measures aim to reduce panic buying and prevent black-market trading of diesel and petrol.
Bangladesh depends heavily on imported energy resources, with estimates suggesting that around 95% of the country’s energy needs are met through imports. Because of this dependence, global geopolitical tensions and disruptions in oil supply chains can quickly affect the country’s fuel availability and prices.
The diesel supply from India comes through the Bangladesh–India Friendship Pipeline, a 131-km pipeline connecting India’s Numaligarh refinery in Assam to Bangladesh’s Parbatipur oil depot. The project was jointly developed to strengthen energy cooperation and improve fuel supply reliability for Bangladesh.
Energy experts say the pipeline is a strategic project because it reduces transportation costs, improves supply stability, and strengthens economic cooperation between India and Bangladesh.
