Today was organised by Alex B, primarily using the train, starting from York, venturing to Saltaire, Bingley, Keighly, eventually ending up in Skipton in Craven.
With an earlyish and wet start to the day, we travelled into York and changed at Leeds for a train to Saltaire. An early arrival meant breakfast part 2 at a local bakery up the road from the church - which was delicious. Rachel B almost adopted an affectionate pussy cat and we wandered around for a while before heading up to the tower. They are a sweet little 6, an intermediate floor up the stairs and go well. A couple of short clips of Grandsire and forwards / backwards / queens was taken. Norwich was also rung respectably, though a tad bit more care was perhaps needed over some of the other touches rung.
Given the good weather, a group of us decided to walk along the Canal to Bingley for lunch. A decent lunch break, naturally in Spoons for the vast majority of us, then we ventured to the tower. The bells took a bit more work than other towers before today, sound old fashioned and also featured Yorkshire tail ends which made for a bit of weird handling. Bob Triples, call changes, Stedman Doubles were particular touches.
Naturally, a bell tower with the word Keighley in it springs the question, it is near the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, are there any steam trains running today, when are we ringing, what time does the steam depart, do we have time for a train grab...! Luckily, I got my fix with a five coach rake of MK1 maroon coaches and a standard class 2 tender engine departing Keighley. Preserved steam railways might be factored into next year's tour. Keighley has a fine Gillett ring of 8 with some interesting internal acoustics - potentially the tenor also needs to be a bit louder, easily ring-able and we rang Grandsire Triples, Plain Hunt and call changes very respectably.
Our last tower was Skipton in Craven, amongst one of our finest 8s for the week. Accoustically very good inside and out - sounding very equal, and very ring-able with a bit of care taken. A lot of ringing features here including a respectable 3 leads of Bristol, plenty of Plain Hunt, call changes and a lower, hopefully bringing those hums out. Not recorded sadly after my camera packed up, but our finest touches of Grandsire was rung; - that was a joy to ring in!
