Our second day back ringing back in the city provided some real gems. A later start today, so some of us took advantage of going back into the city early for drinks, shopping and taking in some more of York. Simon, Rachel B and I stumbled across a cat cafe, Whiskers, somehow becoming very occupied with cats very quickly!
First tower of the day was Clifton, a nice 3cwt 6; tuneful, easy going, decent to strike and rather nice church as well. Having arrived later than planned, a touch of Grandsire and downwards fulfilled our grab.
The next tower, St Martin-le-Grand, or just St Martins, have to be one of my favourite 8s in their weight category and tick most boxes when it comes to acoustics, ring-ability, accessibility and clarity outside. As a result, we achieved some pretty decent ringing, well run by Rachel B - a set of call changes to Tittums and back was of particular note and arguably striking competition worthy. A relaxed and slightly tired band somehow makes neat work of an impromptu jump change from Kings to rounds. The bells really hum on the way down as well.
With time to spare, a fish and chip dinner in the Minster Gardens called, before making our way to the Oratory, St Wilfred. Whilst they need to be kept going and the back ones need a tad of pulling about, they seem almost a musical box ring of 10 and a pleasure to ring. A few goes at plain hunt, touch of Grandsire, re-exercising myself on 10 bell call changes and half a course of Yorkshire were the tunes.
