The most common question we get is, "What steps can I take to prevent water damage in my home or business?" So here are some tips.
First, know where the water shutoff valve is located. Shutting off water from the source will save your property from further damage. Check water supply lines and drains in the kitchen and bathrooms. Don't forget to check where the dishwasher hose connects to the supply line. Any condensation around the pipes, rust or corrosion is a sign of a problem. If your refrigerator has an icemaker, you'll want to check that supply line as well. Check around the shower or bathtub. Look for loose or cracked tiles, cracked or crumbling grout lines.
Broken washing machine hoses are one of the most common causes of water damage, so check them regularly for bulging, cracking, fraying and leaks around the hose ends. Replace them every three to five years.
When replacing supply lines, consider using reinforced, graded stainless steel hoses. And also think about installing leak detectors.
If you aren't sure, have a qualified plumber or roofer look at your property for any signs of potential problems or failures.
