Water carries hidden dangers that may not be immediately evident. So knowing the three categories of water will help you better assess your situation.
Category 1, clean water, typically originates from burst pipes, appliance malfunctions, tub or sink overflows, or leaks in the roof. If the damaged area is not dried properly, it can result in secondary damage such as mold growth.
Category 2, gray water, is water that is contaminated to some degree. When a toilet, washing machine, or dishwasher overflows, the resulting water will be considered gray because of its source. Any type of water that has been used in any way or contaminated possesses greater risk and challenges because of the microbes that may be present.
Category 3, black water, is the most hazardous of the three types. It's usually the result of a natural disaster or sewage backup. Black water can include toxic material, such as bacteria, chemicals, pesticides, and more. It can put you, your family, and your pets in danger if not handled properly.
We strongly urge you to call a professional. They have the proper equipment and certifications to restore your home safely and thoroughly. Keep in mind, due to water-borne bacteria, a clean water loss can turn into a gray water loss, and a gray water loss into a black water loss, if not taken care of in a timely and efficient manner.
