In this video, I want to talk about something we don’t hear about very often.
Most conversations about sleep focus on people who can’t sleep — difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
But there’s another experience that many people have:
Sleeping too much.
Sometimes the nervous system moves into what’s called a dorsal state — a low-energy state where we may feel tired, withdrawn, heavy, or shut down. In this state, sleep can become a way the nervous system tries to cope.
Using a simple nervous system ladder model, I explain:
• The three main nervous system pathways
• Why some people struggle with insomnia (sympathetic activation)
• Why others may find themselves sleeping excessively (dorsal shutdown)
• The difference between supportive dorsal (rest, sleep, meditation) and survival dorsal (shutdown, numbness, withdrawal)
• Why sleep challenges are often connected to nervous system regulation
Sleep is often not the problem itself — it’s a signal from the nervous system about what state your body is in.
Understanding this can bring a lot more compassion and clarity to your sleep experience.
