“The province team told me ‘You’re not allowed’. At that time I’m too young, I don’t know why. Then my father finally told me: ‘because you’re too short.’ They think I won’t be good in the future, no hope and no future. I just cried all the time. But the next day, I told my father ‘I want to try’.
History Maker Deng Yaping is a Chinese table tennis player, who won 6 world championships and 4 Olympic championships between 1989 and 1997. She is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
However, Yaping was initially denied a spot on the national team because she was so short (she stood 1.5 metres [4 feet 11 inches] tall). She was finally included on the national team in 1988.
Deng won the provincial junior championship at 9 and won her first national championship when she was 13.
In this interview, Deng shares how she spent her time after her career, retiring at the early age of 24! She also shares a story regarding her first meeting with former IOC president, Juan Antonio Samaranch.
‘History Makers’ is a series following some of the incredible athletes who have shaped the course of history in sport and have overcome great challenges to win
