Dr. Wafa Hozien, Assistant Professor of Education, Administration, and Supervision at Virginia State University, discusses some of the themes from the 17th Annual Values and Leadership Conference which was held in Brisbane, Australia between October 1-2, 2012. In this video clip, Dr. Hozien describes what approaches, practices, or perspectives can build a leader’s capacity for ethical leadership.
Dr. Hozien briefly introduces the concepts of moral purpose and moral action as they relate to education and school reform. She next recommends that schools develop a culture of evaluation, create a language of moral action, share a common vision of moral purpose for the school to aspire to, and strive to make education engaging, authentic, and change-oriented.
Dr. Hozien further elaborates on the following four strategies that she proposes educators incorporate when transforming their moral purpose into moral action: consistently increase knowledge base, work collaboratively, implement change as an action plan, and continually seek improvement
In the first part of this discussion, Dr. Hozien briefly reviews the concepts of ethics, ethical leadership, ethical dilemmas, and codes of ethics in education. She then proposes that schools should prioritize and promote engaging collaborative relationships, focus on what is in the “best interest of the students,” and proactively seek out varied and continual sources of knowledge.
In the second part of the discussion, Dr. Hozien recommends strategies that she believes can assist schools with efforts to build the capacity for ethical leadership, including identifying stakeholders, presenting ethical trainings sessions, and establishing meaningful relationships with community members.
