It was one of those mornings in the mighty Karakoram when the mountains glowed golden and the chill of the Hunza air whispered adventure. After an unexpected night in Gulmit at Abbott Lodge in Gulmit—thanks to Ayyan’s bike giving up last night near Hussaini Bridge and coming back to life early this morning —our biker group geared up again, engines roaring through the valleys of Upper Hunza.

Our destination? Sost, the gateway to the Khunjerab Pass—the Pakistan-China border, one of the world’s highest paved roads. But as every traveler knows, plans in the mountains have a life of their own.

The Karakoram Highway, though majestic, had taken a beating from recent rains. Landslides, overflowing rivers, and narrow cliffside bends kept our hearts racing. Yet, every twist revealed scenes so beautiful they made the struggle worthwhile—especially the sight of the iconic Passu Cones, standing like stone sentinels against the sky.

On the way, I narrated the story written on the Passu Peak board, sharing its legacy in Urdu, feeling connected to the land and its people. Just a few kilometers ahead, we came across the humble yet legendary Glacier Breeze Café, known for its world-famous Apricot Cake. Sadly, it was too early—doors closed, ovens silent.

But fate had another plan. On our return journey from Sost—after Zubair fell unwell and we decided to head back toward Karimabad—we found the café open. The smell of freshly baked apricot cake filled the cold Hunza air. Each bite was heavenly—sweet, warm, and full of local love. The friendly local chefs shared stories of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and ex-President Arif Alvi visiting this very place to taste the same cake we were savoring.

The café was surrounded by breathtaking, almost unreal landscapes.

And that’s where this chapter ends… but the next one begins soon—from here to Altit Fort, a 900-year-old Hunza fortress hiding dark secrets and ancient tales.
